We were recently given the opportunity to test out and review Bio Seaweed Gel’s new Uptown Lights Summer 2015 collection and we are very excited to share our experience because Bio Seaweed Gel is free of the ‘5 big nasties’: formaldehyde, toluene, DBP, BHA and solvents. Several traditional nail or gel polish brands have some or all of those chemicals so this brand is a healthier gel alternative for those looking for one.
We prefer 5-free polishes because you avoid exposing your body to these harmful chemicals, while also preventing nail dehydration, staining and weakening. We also loved this collection because the gels are all UNITY Colours, which means it’s a base, colour and top coat all in one and you don’t need to have or use a UV/LED lamp to set them. Instead, you can cure the gel with sunlight!
We had used their 3STEP Colour products before, (which requires a UV/LED lamp), and loved them, but this was our first time using the Unity range.
The Uptown Lights collection is also so cute because all of the colours are inspired by Canadian cities, and there’s a good mixture of neutral and bright colours to choose from. We picked Winnipeg, Fredericton, Halifax and Quebec City to try out. Check the colours out below, and continue reading for our review and ‘how-to’ guide for using Bio Seaweed Gel’s Unity All-In-One gels.
Winnipeg – 263 – Unity All-In-One
Winnipeg is a pretty peachy-pink, and takes about 3 coats to be totally opaque like the picture. No top coat was used above and it has a nice shine without if you wanted to save the step.
Fredericton – 252 – Unity All-In-One
We both loved this colour…as did our friends, our families, and our coworkers! This colour drew a lot of complements as well as pleas to try it out! 🙂 In this picture I had 2 coats of the gel followed by 1 coat of the no-wipe top.
Halifax – 253 – Unity All-In-One
This neutral colour looks great with anything you wear! I think it might be the favourite for both of us. This is also 2 coats of gel with a top coat.
Quebec City – 257 – Unity All-In-One
This colour is even brighter than we expected it to be, and it looks great with a tan. This colour also took 3 thin coats to be totally opaque.
- While out of direct sunlight apply a thin coat of gel, then let cure in direct sunlight for 1-2 minutes (until it is smooth, not sticky).
2. Apply another thin coat while out of direct sunlight, then cure in the sun again for 1-2 minutes.
3. Finish with a thin layer of clear No-Wipe Top Gel Polish, then cure in sunlight for 2 minutes.
This gel can also be used with UV/LED lamps if you have access to one.
This Unity All-In-One gel is very easy to use. We love getting the quality of gel mixed with the simplicity of applying regular polish. When applied properly, the gel stays on without chipping or peeling until there is so much nail regrowth that you need to take it off. Taking off gel polish is a little more time consuming than removing normal polish, so keep that in mind if you like to switch things up often with your nail colour. These gel polishes are meant to last, which is a big bonus for us but can be seen as a negative to some.
There were a couple of times that we applied the gel and it started to peel after a few days, but we realized that it was likely due to poor application (we left our hands in a UV Lamp for too long!). You do need to make sure that nails are fully cleaned and dried, and it is best to apply very thin layers.
The only other thing we would share is that the colour swatches ON the bottles did not always match the colour IN the bottles. If you have the bottles in front of you before you buy, this is not an issue. However, if you are looking to buy on-line, we would suggest that you look through peoples nail swatches (on instagram or blogs) for the colour you like instead of solely relying on the photo on the bottle.
That being said, we really like these polishes and use them often. It is wonderful having a healthier alternative to traditional gels/polishes! We will be trying out some more colours soon :).
Here on Kicking It Whole School, we will always be honest about how we feel. These nail polishes were sent to us, but we had been using the brand before this and shared our true feelings and opinion about the product with you here.
