Golden Milk (Dairy Free)

FullSizeRender(1).jpg

I’ve been using food to help balance my hormones in order to clear up the hormonal acne that I was getting on my chin. One of the things included in my hormone balancing meal plan is getting 2 tsp of turmeric into me every day! Luckily I really like turmeric and consume it often, making turmeric tea and sprinkling it on everything. My new favourite way to enjoy turmeric is Golden Milk – I drink it every evening!

Banana, Almond, Maca Powder Smoothie

Almond Maca Smoothie

I was recently exposed to Maca Powder, a ‘superfood’ that grows at high altitudes. It has been linked to increasing energy levels and balancing hormones just to name a couple of perks to the flavour, which is why I enjoy adding it to my smoothies. To me, maca powder has a rich nutty flavour, but it can be an acquired taste (Erin isn’t a fan, but I love it). It’s my new favourite smoothie add-on :). Read on for the full recipe and the brands of the powders I use. (more…)

3 B Smoothie – Blueberries, Beets and Bananas!

3 B smoothie Bluberries Beets and Banana

The colour and taste of this smoothie was unbelievable, my mouth was stained for part of the morning, but it was worth it. I recently got a juicer and beets are one of my favourite things to juice because of their earthy and sweet flavour. Not to mention that beet juice packs a big nutritional punch. Some of the cited health benefits of beet juice include:

  • Increased stamina or energy because of it’s high concentration of natural nitrates. Nitrates help increase blood flow in your body.
  • Lowered blood pressure
  • Decreases inflammation in the body because it’s a strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties
  • It’s ability to detox the liver

…And the list goes on, but just as a reminder, if you’re not going to drink this smoothie for it’s health benefits, you can still drink it for it’s delicious taste.

Cashew Milkshake (without the milk…)

Cashew SmoothieI have been obsessing about this smoothie, because it mimics the feel of a milkshake for me without any dairy. Both Erin and I share a love of milkshakes – even in the winter, but with Erin eliminating dairy, and me cutting it down, I’ve been on the lookout for a dairy-free alternative.

Enter… CASHEWS! Well, at least for me. Erin has to avoid cashews as well, but you could swap cashews for Brazil nuts for that creamy texture. The frozen bananas thicken the smoothie up and make it cold like a milkshake while the nuts give it that velvety texture. I could drink this every day!

Mango Pineapple Kale Smoothie

I recently bought a plant-based protein powder with a flavour that I hadn’t had before, Coconut Almond, and this was the first smoothie I tried it in… it was sweet and delicious!

The protein powder I used is Vega One’s All-In-One Nutritional Shake. This plant based protein powder is vegan, gluten-free, has no added sugar, and is made with whole food ingredients. A single scoop has 20g of complete protein, 6 servings of greens, and is full of antioxidants, probiotics, fibre, and omega-3 fatty acids.

Pink Lady Smoothie

raspberry smoothie

I’ve always preferred blueberries over raspberries, but lately I’ve been loving this combination. The tartness of the raspberry is really fresh for summer, and you’re getting fibre, folate, vitamin C and extra goodies from the berries.

Good Morning Sunshine Juice

Beautiful, delicious and healthy. This drink reminds me of when I was a slushy obsessed kid, and how I often couldn’t choose between two flavours, so I would just get them both. It always tasted better mixed anyway 🙂
