I think this is my new favourite way to enjoy smoked salmon! I’ve been having fun experimenting with making different flat breads lately, (aka fancy pizzas), because I bought a gluten and dairy free Flax Pizza Kit by O’Doughs that I’ve really enjoyed! The kit comes with 4 crusts that can be used to make pizza, garlic bread, or whatever your heart desires! This smoked salmon flat bread is definitely my favourite meal that I made using the crusts. The next time I make it, I’m going to try it with either a cauliflower crust, or my dairy and gluten free crust.
I came across Ella Woodward’s website one day while I was scrolling through food porn pictures on Pinterest. Usually when something on Pinterest sparks my interest, I follow the link to check it our further; if I still like it, I’ll pin that one recipe and then exit out of that website and never visit it again. However, I occasionally come across a website that captures my attention and somehow sucks me in to exploring it for hours. Even more rarely, I find a website that keeps me coming back regularly to visit – Deliciously Ella turned out to be of those sites. When I found out that Ella was releasing a cook book I was so excited, and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on a copy! Ella’s book, Deliciously Ella, contains healthy recipes that are all plant-based and gluten-free!
Ella Woodward has a very inspirational story about how she got started down a path of healthier eating and living. She did not grow up eating a plant-based and gluten-free diet, in fact she was a self-professed sugar monster and fruit and vegetable hater. However, when she was just 19 she was diagnosed with a rare illness called Postural Tachycardia Syndrome, which effected her autonomic nervous system and plagued her with pain. She ended up being bedridden 95 percent of the time, and drugs and steroids were not helping her. After doing some research, she came across some people who had healed their conditions with food, and she was inspired to give it a try. She immediately gave up her old eating habits and started a whole-foods, plant-based diet, which meant giving up meat, sugar, dairy, gluten, and all processed foods. Amazing, while making this change Ella slowly started to feel better, and after 2 years she was off of all her medications and was symptom free! Talk about a success story!
I have recently changed my diet in a similar way to try to help with my own chronic health issues; stories like Ella’s inspire me to keep it up, and cook books like Ella’s help me to enjoy the transition. I’ve tried many recipes from her website and loved them, so I can’t wait to start trying out recipes from her book! Check back on this post often throughout the month as it will be filled with pictures and reviews of the recipes that I try!
It is Theme Song Thursday! The theme song for this gluten and dairy free Grilled Chocolate and Almond Butter sandwich says it all…
Earlier today we posted this Watermelon-Mint-Lemonade on our Instagram account. It’s an incredibly easy and healthy drink to make for any picnic, BBQ or in this case –Mother’s Day. 🙂 It takes almost no time to make, is refreshing and doesn’t sit heavy in your stomach, so it’s great for the summer months. It’s also super healthy for both you and your mom!
Watermelon is roughly 90% water, so it provides a lot of hydration as well as Vitamin A, C and natural lycopene. Lycopene is a phytonutrient and antioxidant, you often find it in fruits and veggies that are red, like tomatoes, grapefruits etc.. Lycopene has been shown to help protect cells from damage and has been linked to cancer prevention (not too shabby…). The lemon is another bonus ingredient, and helps with the alkalinity of your body – for more on the benefits of lemon water, click here to see an earlier post.
Lucky for me, and my mom’s health, she loves watermelon so I’m sure this will be a hit. What types of things do you do/make for your Mom to celebrate Mother’s Day?
My friend Lyndsay, (who also happens to be Sasha’s sister), is into clean eating too, and is a wonderful cook! She loves good food, and loves to share that food with everyone around her. This broccoli, kale, leek soup was a meal she had shared with me the last time I was over, and I liked it so much that I asked her to share the recipe with all of you!
This toast makes a great breakfast or snack! The almond butter and hemp hearts make a complete protein; the cinnamon helps to regulate blood sugar and can reduce cravings; and the honey is anti-bacterial and actually helps with blood sugar regulation too! And best of all, it is delicious 🙂
Tacos are awesome because you basically just dump in a bunch of delicious toppings, then pick it up and DEVOUR it! But depending on what fillings you choose, your taco may not be the healthiest… However, if the shell of your taco is a leaf of lettuce, you know you are headed in the right direction. Then all you have to do is fill it with toppings that make both your taste buds and your body happy, like these roasted chickpeas!
